This week the students are starting to read Novels. The 4th grade will be reading Because of Winn Dixie. The 5th grade will be reading The Ninth Ward. Both groups will be writing chapter summaries. The 5th graders will be learning how to write Reading Response Prompts. These prompts will be stapled to their reading journals. Each grade level will have reading homework. Each group will read for 20 minutes and respond to their reading either writing a chapter summary (4th grade ) or completing a reading response (5th grade).
Parents: Enjoy the novels with your child. Make it a regular "Reading Date Night" and enjoy the readings and help your child write their summaries or reading responses!
Both grades in math will be working on Unit 1 of Go Math. Students will be exploring place value, standard form, expanded form, word form and increasing their mulitplication skills. Each grade level will have a nightly homework assignment from their workbook. Students are to do the best that they can. If students have difficulty, please call me between the hours of 4:30 and 8:30pm daily. You may also leave me a note in your child's agenda. I will help your child the next day with the math problems left unfinished.
Students will be introduced to writing strategies, paragraph formation and finding evidence from the text. Mrs. Wasson will be modeling how to write complete sentences using verb/subject agreement.
This week, students will start collaborative working groups in reading, writing, word fluency practice and math.
Lastly, Many Many Shoutouts to all my wonderful students! I am very proud of all of them. "Small Wins" is key! We are all learning with lots of fun!
Shoutouts to both my teacher assistants, Ms. Mendoza and Miss Tafoya for your support!
Looking forward to meeting all of you at Curriculum Night this Thursday, September 17th!
